Excellence Awards

The Dean's Excellence Awards honor dedicated faculty and professionals across Brown's basic science and clinical departments.

The Office of the Dean sponsors a number of awards to recognize the dedicated faculty and professionals who effectively teach and mentor students, residents, and scholars across the Division of Biology and Medicine.

Excellence Awards for Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring in The Warren Alpert Medical School

The Dean’s Excellence Awards in Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring recognize the dedicated campus-based faculty, hospital-based instructors, and office-based teachers who effectively teach and mentor our medical students and residents. The Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented to clinical and basic science faculty for their exemplary teaching in preclinical courses, core clerkships and clinical electives. These faculty members are recognized for their exceptional teaching and mentoring as lecturers, small-group leaders, and laboratory, hospital-based and office-based preceptors.

Excellence Awards in Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring in the Division of Biology and Medicine

Dean’s awards for excellence in teaching, advising and mentoring are presented to faculty in three categories: undergraduate teaching, graduate/ postgraduate teaching and mentoring, and faculty research mentoring. The process for the awards is as follows:

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Advising and Mentoring in Biological Sciences

This annual award recognizes a faculty member in the Division of Biology and Medicine for their outstanding teaching, advising and mentoring of students in the Undergraduate Divisional programs in the Biological Sciences. Nominees may be recognized for teaching excellence within courses; for advising (freshman, sophomore and especially, concentration advising); other services enhancing service to undergraduates (e.g., participation in special programs, presentations, events, etc.). Additional service/teaching activity is also regarded, such as mentoring directed research and independent studies including thesis and Honors supervision.

Nomination Process

A letter of nomination is required in which the nominator(s) provides specific information about the scope and magnitude of the nominee’s contributions. Whenever possible, substantial supporting documentation (e.g., endorsements from mentees and advisees, colleagues, the Department Chair, and former students) should accompany the nomination letter.

Nominations should be made electronically using this form.

Deadline is February 27, 2026.

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Graduate and/or Postdoctoral Teaching and Mentoring in Biological Sciences

This award recognizes a faculty member (campus- or hospital-based) in the Division of Biology and Medicine for their outstanding teaching and mentoring of graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars. Nominees may be recognized for efforts within multiple domains including the classroom, a graduate program, predoctoral or postdoctoral training grants, advising/career advancement of trainees, and any combination thereof.

Nomination Process

A letter of nomination is required in which the nominator(s) provides specific information about the scope and magnitude of the nominee’s contributions. Supporting documentation (e.g., endorsements from trainees) is strongly encouraged to accompany the nomination letter.

Nominations should be made electronically using this form.

The deadline for nominations is February 27, 2026.

The portfolio for each nominee should include a current curriculum vitae and a letter of nomination, no more than two pages in length, that describes the nominee’s abilities, accomplishments, and impact in teaching. The nomination letter should provide specific information about the scope and magnitude of the nominee’s contributions. Supporting letters or documentation are strongly encouraged and may be submitted by colleagues, former students, teaching assistants, advisees, and the department chair.

 

Dean's Award for Faculty Research Mentoring in the Division of Biology and Medicine

This award recognizes a faculty member (campus- or hospital-based) in the Division of Biology and Medicine for their outstanding research mentoring of junior faculty.

Nomination Process

A letter of nomination is required in which the nominator(s) provides specific information about the scope and magnitude of the nominee’s research mentoring contributions. Supporting documentation (e.g., endorsements from faculty mentees) is strongly encouraged to accompany the nomination letter.

Nominations should be made electronically using this form.

The deadline for nominations is February 27, 2026.
